Transcending the rationale for social networking

IT's role in two major social trends in a highly individualism and totalitarian systems highly individualized and systemized modern society

In September 2009, over 250 million active members were registered on Facebook’s social network site, among them close to 13 million Canadians. It is therefore not only relevant – but necessary – to determine what this “social” produces from when nearly 40% of the Canadian population socializes on the same ubiquitous “social enabler”. Sociologist and UQAM Media School professor, André Mondoux, examines this “trend” in the context of the highly individualized and systemized modern society and presents an analysis that transcends the rationale for social networking sites or their unavoidable passage to 2.0.

André Mondoux is a sociologist specializing in information technology. His research focuses on the links between technology and human reproduction, particularly technology's role in the emergence of two major social trends: hyperindividualism and totalitarian systems. Before completing his sociology training, he worked as a journalist and was a regular contributor to Info-Tech magazine and to newspapers such as Direction Informatique, La Presse and Les Affaires. He currently appears on TV programs on the MusiquePlus network.

André Mondoux holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Quebec at Montreal, where he currently teaches in the Department of Sociology and Communications. His research focuses on the links between technology and human reproduction, particularly technology's role in the emergence of two major social trends: hyperindividualism and totalitarian systems (“one world” systems), which are at the heart of a dynamic driving contemporary digital communications phenomena.
