Fighting Cyber Crime: Emerging Threats, Challenges, Trends and Solutions

Nowadays, IT and Internet are pervading almost every aspect of the socioeconomic interactions prevalent in the dynamics of our contemporary society, extending our abilities and enriching our lives. However, this also opens new avenues for various illegal activities and cyber crime that are increasing in seriousness, frequency and scale. In this context, the impact can range from identity theft (personal level) to cyber attacks on corporations, government institutions and public utilities (institutional level). In this talk, we will overview the main threats, challenges and trends. We will also share insights and present results on the level of sophistication, scalability and impact of some of the major attacks. Moreover, we will discuss different strategies that may be used in order to mitigate the underlying risks, attenuate the potential impact and provide support during attack investigation procedures. In this respect, we will also provide an overview and assessment of the existing capabilities in terms of IT security and cyber forensic technologies.
